Introduction to Journaling as a Wellness Practice
During this six-week class, students will be introduced to the practice of journaling through various writing exercises designed to foster self-reflection. Students will grow comfortable with the “sounds” of their own voices on paper as well as the simple (yet not really) act of sitting down and facing the blank page as they write their ongoing life stories. As a by-product, students will enhance their writing fluency and cultivate their literacy development through the art of personal reflection.

The following comments are from students in South High School’s TAPPP program:
“Thank you for being with us and giving us an opportunity to express ourselves and to relieve stress. I really appreciate it and think it’s a great idea. Keep doin’ what you do. God bless your heart.”
“I really love this class. I look forward to it every week. It really helps me work out my frustrations and count my blessings. Thank you so much for this opportunity. Keep up the good work.”
“Things are going good. I really like the fact that we get to jot down things at the end of the week so that I can look back at what I did that week and if my week was bad or just great then I can put it into words and keep on with my life.”
“I like your attitude when you come into class! You always have a positive impact on my morning. I like the music you play. It’s very relaxing.”
“I would like to do more journaling. I love to write. It feels so great.”
“We spend too much time writing. I’m not a big fan of writing, it gets me tired. But I like this class a lot. It’s calming.”
Dreamkeepers
During this six-week advanced journaling class, students will continue to develop their journaling practice as well as begin to write toward their dreams and into their futures. Students will learn and use visualization strategies coupled with writing exercises as a way to empower themselves to identify the lives they are meant to live. This class is based on the belief and philosophy that we all have gifts to contribute to the world, and the challenge to all people is how to quiet the voices outside of ourselves so that we can better hear the voices within ourselves and consciously live our lives, our stories.
